What Stockie writes to your Shopify store
Stockie reads a lot from your store and writes very little back. Installing it changes nothing: the permissions Stockie asks for at install are read-only.
Writing is a separate permission you grant later, only if you use the features that need it.
What Stockie reads
- Products and variants - titles, SKUs, barcodes, vendors, types, tags, status
- Inventory levels across your locations
- Locations
- Orders and sales history, which is what forecasting is calculated from
- Fulfilments, so sales can be attributed to the location that shipped them
All of it is read. None of these permissions allow Stockie to change anything.
What Stockie writes
Two things, and only when you ask for them.
Inventory quantities. Specifically:
- Incoming inventory, as a purchase order moves through its life. Marking it ordered adds the quantities; editing, closing, reopening, receiving, unreceiving or unrejecting all adjust what is still outstanding
- Available inventory, when you receive or unreceive a purchase order, apply a stocktake, or apply an inventory adjustment
Stocking a product at a location. If you receive or adjust stock for a product that Shopify does not yet track at that location, Stockie turns tracking on there so the quantity can be recorded. It sets no quantity of its own.
Product fields. Specifically:
- Cost per item, when you have configured cost syncing to write to Shopify. Cost is the only field of that record Stockie sends - not the SKU, barcode, weight or anything else on it
- Price and compare-at price, only when you set them yourself from a purchase order or receive screen
Every one of those is an action you take deliberately. Stockie does not write inventory or costs on its own schedule.
What Stockie never touches
- Metafields
- Themes, templates and storefront content
- Customer data
- Orders - Stockie reads them and never edits, fulfils or cancels one
- Discounts, pricing rules and marketing
- Anything in Shopify not listed in the two sections above
Stockie does not request permission to read customer records at all.
Stock transfers are read only. Stockie mirrors the transfers you create in Shopify so it can report on them, and never creates or changes one.
Write access is separate from install
Install grants read-only access. Writing needs two further permissions, requested only when you first use a feature that needs them:
- Inventory write access - for purchase order receiving, stocktakes and inventory adjustments
- Product write access - for cost, price and compare-at price
Someone who can approve app permissions for the store has to grant each one. Until then, Stockie can read your store and calculate, but cannot change anything in it.
If you want the forecast without any writing at all, that is a supported way to run Stockie - do not grant the write permissions, and use it as a read-only planning tool.
Track orders only
Beyond withholding the permission, a store can be set to Track orders only. Orders and receipts are recorded in Stockie and your Shopify quantities are never touched. Purchase order screens show a banner saying it is enabled, so you can tell at a glance. Some stores can also decide this per purchase order.
