Margins and retail prices

Available on: Pro Plus.

Stockie shows the margin on a product from its cost and its retail price, and lets you change the retail price while you are working through a purchase order.

Seeing margin

Margin is calculated from what the product costs you and what you sell it for. It updates as you change either.

Changing retail prices

You can set a product's price and compare-at price directly from the purchase order and the receive screen, and write them back to Shopify. That is the practical moment to reprice - you have just seen what the new stock cost you.

What Stockie does not do

Stockie will not work backwards from a target margin to produce a price. There is no "price everything at 60% margin" function - you set the price, and Stockie tells you the margin it produces.

If your prices include tax

Where your Shopify prices include tax, the tax has to come out of the selling price before margin means anything. Otherwise every figure reads better than it is, because you are counting money that belongs to the tax authority.

Stockie does that using your Default sales tax, set at Settings → Taxes   alongside your purchase tax default. Leave it unset and it follows your purchase default.

If a product has a tax rule of its own, that rule's rate is used instead.

Two things worth knowing:

  • On a tax-exclusive store this setting does nothing. Your selling price is already the amount you keep, so there is nothing to strip out.
  • A supplier's default purchase tax does not affect margin. That setting describes what your supplier charges you, not what you charge your customer, so the selling-price side stays with the product's rule or your sales default. See taxes on purchase orders.
